Walking at Night is a short story I wrote near the end of 1996.  This is another of my “lost in the woods at night” stories.  It seems to be a recurring theme in my work, probably because that fear is so personal.  I used to live in West Virginia along a small, rural road called Aaron’s Fork.  I lived maybe a mile and a half from anything resembling civilization but despite the short distance that road was completely dark at night.  That far out and you won’t find a single city light.  It was a common occurrence to find myself driving this road and, on at least one occasion, I had to walk it at night by myself after a long shift at the local McDonald’s.  This story combines both of those experiences into one, including all the crazy ideas my mind would dream up while I was on these trips.

This is an early work so it suffers from my impatience to get it done, youth, and inexperience; maybe even more.  Just be gentle.  :)

Here’s the synopsis:

Dana Meyers always wondered why his girlfriend’s parents chose to live in such a rural, desolate place.  Young and in love, Dana happily makes the lonely drive to see Carol, despite his misgivings of the area.  When Dana finds himself stranded in the darkness he quickly realizes he’s not alone in those woods and that not everything in the woods is more afraid of you than you are of it.
